Ilex altaclerensis Golden King is a female, evergreen holly forming a handsome large shrub or small tree with glossy, broadly variegated leavesdeep green centrally with bright golden-yellow margins and relatively few spines. Small white flowers appear in late spring; with a suitable male pollinator nearby, these can be followed by red berries through autumn and winter. A reliable, fully hardy structural choice for specimens, hedging or topiary, it thrives in full sun or partial shade and in fertile, moist but well-drained soils, including chalk.
