Blue Maid (Ilex meserveae) is a female holly valued for its dense, glossy bluegreen, spiny foliage and neat, structural habit. In late spring it bears small white flowers; when pollinated by a suitable male (e.g. Blue Prince), it produces bright red berries that add winter interest. Grow in full sun or partial shade in moist but welldrained, fertile soil, preferably neutral to acidic. A fully hardy choice for specimens, evergreen structure and formal hedging; moderate growth with an eventual height and spread within the medium shrub range.
