Skimmia japonica Rubella is a compact, slow-growing evergreen valued for its glossy green foliage and long-lasting deep red flower buds through autumn and winter, which open to scented white spring flowers. Best in partial to full shade and in moist but well-drained, moderately fertile neutral to acid (ericaceous) soil; avoid chalky conditions. Forms a neat mound to around 1m, ideal for containers or shaded borders and for reliable winter interest; Rubella is a male selection and does not produce berries, though it can pollinate female skimmias nearby.
