Hoya ranauensis is a rare and stunning Hoya species native to the Ranau region of Sabah, Borneo. Like many Hoyas from this area, it is treasured by collectors for its bold, glossy foliage and breathtakingly vibrant flowers. It belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is one of the standout species for those who appreciate richly coloured blooms and tropical elegance.

The leaves are medium to large, oval, and leathery, with a glossy surface and prominent veining. They are typically deep green, sometimes showing a subtle red blush on newer growth under strong light. The plants vining nature allows it to climb or trail gracefully, making it ideal for hanging baskets, trellises, or decorative supports.

When mature, Hoya ranauensis produces umbels of spectacular, star-shaped flowers that range in colour from bright yellow to deep orange-red, depending on light and maturity. Each flower has a waxy finish and a richly contrasting red or maroon corona, releasing a sweet fragrance in the evening. These radiant blooms make it one of the most visually striking Hoyas in cultivation.

Hoya ranauensis Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. A few hours of gentle morning or late-afternoon sun enhances both leaf colour and flowering. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can burn foliage.

Watering

Water when the top 23 cm of soil feels dry. This semi-succulent species prefers to dry slightly between waterings but should not be left completely dry for extended periods. Reduce watering in winter.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth, 1828C. Keep above 15C and protect from cold draughts.

  • Humidity: High humidity (6080%) encourages lush growth and frequent blooms. Mist regularly or use a humidifier to maintain optimal levels.

Soil and Potting

Use a chunky, airy, and free-draining epiphytic mix orchid bark, perlite, coco husk, and a little peat-free compost. Hoyas bloom best when slightly root-bound, so repot every 23 years at most.

Feeding

Feed monthly in spring and summer with a high-potassium fertiliser to encourage flowering. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune vines to manage shape and encourage branching. Do not remove flower peduncles (spurs), as Hoyas rebloom from these each year.

Growth and Maturity

A moderate grower, capable of trailing or climbing up to 12 metres indoors. Flowers usually appear on mature plants once consistent warmth and light are provided.

Common Issues

  • No flowers: Often due to insufficient light or removal of spurs.

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Brown edges: Low humidity or excessive sun.

  • Pests: Occasionally mealybugs, thrips, or spider mites.

Background and Benefits

Discovered in the montane forests of Ranau, Sabah, Hoya ranauensis is a prized species for serious Hoya collectors. Its vividly coloured, fragrant flowers and sturdy, glossy foliage make it both a foliage and flowering showpiece. Despite its exotic origins, it adapts well to indoor growing conditions when given warmth, light, and humidity.
