Monstera Burle Marx Flame is a rare and highly prized tropical aroid celebrated for its unique, flame-like fenestrations and sculptural foliage. Named after the legendary Brazilian landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx, this exceptional Monstera species embodies the drama and refinement of his artistic vision.
The elongated leaves are deeply lobed and dramatically divided, resembling tongues of flame or stylised palm fronds. As the plant matures, each new leaf becomes more intricate, developing deep cuts that almost reach the midrib giving the impression of living sculpture. The foliage is a rich, glossy green with firm texture and prominent veins, held on thick, sturdy petioles that support its architectural form.
Elegant, exotic, and instantly recognisable, Monstera Burle Marx Flame is a true collectors statement plant a rare masterpiece that perfectly bridges the worlds of art and nature.
Thrives in bright, indirect light. A few hours of soft morning or late-afternoon sun will help encourage strong, fenestrated growth. Avoid harsh midday light, which can scorch the leaves, or low light, which may lead to smaller, less divided foliage.
Keep the soil lightly moist but well-drained. Water when the top 34 cm feels dry. Burle Marx Flame prefers consistent moisture during the growing season (spring and summer) but is sensitive to waterlogging. Reduce watering slightly in winter when growth slows.
Temperature: Prefers warm, stable conditions between 2030C. Protect from cold draughts and temperatures below 16C.
Humidity: Requires moderate to high humidity (6080%) to maintain healthy foliage and avoid leaf crisping. Mist occasionally or use a humidifier in dry environments.
Use a loose, airy aroid mix equal parts orchid bark, perlite, compost, and coco coir. This provides airflow while retaining gentle moisture. Repot every 12 years in spring to refresh nutrients and give the roots room to expand. Provide a moss pole or coir totem to support its climbing habit and promote larger, more fenestrated leaves.
Feed every 46 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. A calcium- and magnesium-enriched fertiliser will help strengthen the leaf structure. Stop feeding in autumn and winter when the plant enters slower growth.
Prune occasionally to remove older or damaged leaves and encourage bushier growth. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and restore their glossy finish. Rotate the pot periodically for even light exposure and symmetrical leaf development.
A moderate to fast grower when given warmth, humidity, and support. Mature plants can reach 1.52 metres in height indoors, producing increasingly dramatic leaves with deeper lobes. With age, the foliage takes on its distinctive flame shape, making this one of the most striking Monstera species in cultivation.
Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Brown tips: Low humidity or uneven watering.
Smaller leaves: Insufficient light or lack of support.
Pests: Occasionally spider mites or thrips; treat promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Monstera Burle Marx Flame originates from the tropical forests of Brazil and is named in honour of Roberto Burle Marx a pioneering modernist landscape architect known for integrating native tropical species into his designs. This Monsteras distinct, deeply lobed leaves resemble stylised flames or abstract sculptures, perfectly embodying the artistic elegance for which Burle Marx is celebrated.
In its native environment, it grows as a hemi-epiphyte, climbing tree trunks and basking in filtered light beneath the forest canopy. In cultivation, its an enduring symbol of natural artistry both rare and resilient, thriving under the right tropical conditions. Like other Monsteras, it also purifies the air, filtering toxins and bringing vibrant life to interiors.
