Hoya Sulawesi 3 is a stunning and uncommon species hailing from the tropical island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is admired for its dramatically veined, thick foliage and richly coloured, fragrant blooms. The Sulawesi Hoyas are a group of closely related species and clones, each with slightly different leaf textures and floral characteristics and Sulawesi 3 stands out for its broad, glossy leaves and robust growth.

The leaves are firm, ovate to elliptical, with distinct light-green venation against a dark green background, giving the plant a bold, sculptural look. Under bright light, the leaves may develop a soft silver mottling, adding further depth to the foliage. When mature, Hoya Sulawesi 3 produces clusters of rosy-pink to deep red, star-shaped flowers with a soft white corona. Each bloom has a waxy, porcelain-like finish and exudes a gentle, sweet fragrance, particularly at night.

Strong, compact, and beautifully balanced, Hoya Sulawesi 3 combines striking foliage and exquisite blooms a perfect representation of tropical elegance.

Hoya Sulawesi 3 Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. A few hours of soft morning or late-afternoon sun will encourage flowering and enhance leaf patterning. Too little light can cause slow growth and fewer blooms, while strong midday sun may scorch the leaves.

Watering

Allow the top 34 cm of soil to dry before watering again. Hoya Sulawesi 3 enjoys light, consistent moisture but dislikes sitting in water. During active growth, water thoroughly and let excess drain away. In winter, reduce watering as the plant enters a semi-dormant phase.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers 2030C; avoid cold air or temperatures below 15C.

  • Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity (6080%), typical of tropical environments. If the air is dry, mist occasionally or place near a humidifier to maintain lush foliage and encourage blooms.

Soil and Potting

Use a loose, airy, free-draining mix orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or sphagnum moss are ideal components. This replicates its natural epiphytic environment, ensuring the roots receive airflow while staying slightly moist. Terracotta pots work well to prevent excess moisture build-up. Repot every 23 years to refresh the mix and encourage strong root growth.

Feeding

Feed every 46 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser or a bloom-boosting formula high in phosphorus. Suspend feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune lightly to control length and promote branching. Avoid removing peduncles (flower spurs), as new blooms emerge from the same spurs each season. Clean the leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and enhance their sheen.

Growth and Maturity

A moderate to fast-growing climber, typically reaching 12 metres in length when given support. As it matures, the plant produces more frequent and abundant flower clusters, with each umbel containing up to 20 star-shaped blooms. The combination of striking foliage and abundant flowers makes it a standout in any Hoya collection.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Wrinkled leaves: Underwatering or very low humidity.

  • No flowers: Insufficient light or removal of flower spurs.

  • Pests: Occasionally mealybugs or spider mites; treat promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Background and Benefits

Native to the humid forests of Sulawesi, Indonesia, Hoya Sulawesi 3 grows as an epiphyte, attaching to tree trunks and thriving in dappled light beneath the forest canopy. The Sulawesi Hoyas were discovered during botanical expeditions on the island and are prized for their distinct veined foliage and richly coloured blooms that range from pink to crimson.

This species embodies the beauty and diversity of Southeast Asian Hoyas combining ornamental leaves, intoxicating fragrance, and ease of cultivation. Like all Hoyas, Sulawesi 3 also serves as a natural air purifier, filtering toxins and enriching indoor environments with tropical vitality.
