Hoya Rangsan is a rare and visually stunning hybrid prized for its bold, patterned foliage and clusters of rich pink, star-shaped flowers. Believed to be a complex hybrid within the Hoya genus (likely linked to Hoya elliptica or Hoya finlaysonii lineage), Rangsan combines intricate veining with a lush, sculptural leaf form that makes it an instant favourite among collectors.
The leaves are thick, slightly convex, and deep green with striking silver venation running across the surface like an intricate network of veins. Under bright light, the foliage takes on a subtle bronze hue that enhances its texture. When mature, Hoya Rangsan produces umbels of waxy, five-pointed flowers in a rich pink to magenta tone with pale coronas. Each bloom emits a sweet, tropical fragrance, especially noticeable in the evening hours.
Elegant, rare, and wonderfully fragrant, Hoya Rangsan is a showcase specimen combining exotic foliage and prolific blooms in one spectacular plant.
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Several hours of soft morning or late-afternoon sun will help enhance the silver veining and encourage blooming. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which may scorch the leaves, or deep shade, which can cause dull foliage and limited flowering.
Allow the top 34 cm of soil to dry before watering again. Water thoroughly, ensuring excess drains away. Hoya Rangsan prefers light, consistent moisture but should never sit in soggy soil. In winter, reduce watering frequency as the plants growth slows.
Temperature: Prefers 2030C; avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 15C.
Humidity: Moderate to high humidity (6080%) promotes strong growth and flower production. In drier environments, mist occasionally or use a humidifier.
Use a loose, free-draining, airy mix such as orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or sphagnum moss. This ensures proper airflow and prevents root rot. Hoyas enjoy being slightly root-bound, so repot only when necessary typically every 23 years in spring. Terracotta pots are ideal for natural moisture control.
Feed every 46 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser or a bloom-boosting formula high in phosphorus. Avoid over-fertilising, as Hoyas are light feeders. Cease feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Prune lightly to maintain shape and encourage new branching. Do not remove the peduncles (flower spurs) after flowering, as Hoya Rangsan will rebloom from these each season. Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to highlight the veining and maintain their glossy finish.
A moderate grower with a climbing or trailing habit, typically reaching 11.5 metres in length indoors. Under optimal light and humidity, it produces multiple umbels of richly coloured, fragrant blooms several times a year. Each umbel can hold up to 20 flowers that last a week or more.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Wrinkled leaves: Underwatering or low humidity.
No flowers: Insufficient light or removal of peduncles.
Pests: Occasionally mealybugs or spider mites; treat promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Hoya Rangsan is a rare hybrid believed to have originated in Thailand, created through careful crossbreeding to combine the intricate venation of Hoya finlaysonii types with the vibrant floral displays of more floriferous species. Its name, Rangsan, is Thai in origin and reflects the plants refined elegance and dynamic energy.
Like other Hoyas, this species grows as an epiphyte in the wild, attaching to trees in warm, humid forests and absorbing filtered sunlight beneath the canopy. In cultivation, it thrives under similar conditions bright, indirect light, high humidity, and free-draining soil. Its also an excellent air-purifying plant, helping to freshen indoor spaces while offering a tranquil, tropical aesthetic.
Light: Bright, indirect light; several hours of soft sun daily
Water: Allow top 34 cm of soil to dry between watering
Temperature: 2030C; avoid below 15C
Humidity: Moderate to high (6080%)
Soil: Airy, well-draining mix bark, perlite, coco coir
Feed: Every 46 weeks in spring/summer
Growth: Trailing or climbing vine, 11.5 m; deep green, silver-veined leaves and pink, fragrant flowers
Toxicity note: Contains mild latex sap that may irritate skin and is toxic if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
Display Hoya Rangsan on a trellis or moss pole to highlight its structured veined foliage and cascading flower clusters. Its intricate leaves pair beautifully with smoother, solid-leaved Hoyas like Hoya archboldiana or Hoya macrophylla Splash for visual contrast. For maximum impact, position near a bright window or under grow lights to enhance the silvery veining and encourage prolific blooming.
