Alocasia lauterbachiana Variegata is a spectacular and rare tropical hybrid admired for its elongated, wavy-edged leaves streaked with creamy variegation and bold purple undersides. Native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea, this variety is a variegated form of the iconic Alocasia lauterbachiana, often called the Purple Sword for its elegant, sword-shaped leaves and deep-hued stems.
Each leaf is a masterpiece a glossy, emerald-green canvas brushed with irregular splashes of cream, ivory, and lime, contrasting beautifully with its rich burgundy reverse. The petioles are strong and upright, allowing the leaves to rise dramatically from the base like living sculptures. As the plant matures, its variegation becomes more pronounced, giving each new leaf its own distinct pattern.
Exotic, architectural, and highly collectible, Alocasia lauterbachiana Variegata embodies tropical sophistication combining sharp form, colour contrast, and an unmistakable sense of elegance.
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Consistent brightness is essential to maintain the plants creamy variegation. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the pale areas of the leaves, and very low light, which can cause variegation to fade and slow growth.
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Water when the top 23 cm of soil feels dry. Overwatering may lead to root rot, while letting the soil dry out completely can cause drooping or leaf loss. During winter dormancy, reduce watering but do not allow the soil to dry out entirely.
Temperature: Prefers warmth between 2028C; avoid temperatures below 16C and protect from cold draughts.
Humidity: Enjoys high humidity (6080%) to prevent crisping on the variegated edges. Mist regularly, use a humidifier, or group with other tropical plants to create a stable, humid environment.
Use a light, well-draining aroid mix such as compost, orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. The roots thrive in a substrate that holds moisture but still allows for excellent airflow. Repot every 12 years in spring to refresh the mix and encourage new growth.
Feed every 46 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced fertiliser formulated for foliage plants. Stop feeding during autumn and winter. Avoid over-fertilising, as the lighter variegated areas can be more sensitive to nutrient burn.
Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves close to the base to maintain a clean, structured appearance. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to enhance their shine and variegation. Rotate the plant every few weeks to ensure even growth and light exposure.
A moderate grower, typically reaching 80120 cm in height indoors. Mature plants produce upright, lance-shaped leaves that can grow up to 60 cm long, forming a dramatic clump of tropical foliage. Each new leaf may emerge with fresh patterns of cream and green, making every growth cycle unique.
Yellow leaves: Overwatering or cold stress.
Brown tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.
Loss of variegation: Insufficient light.
Pests: Occasionally spider mites or thrips; maintain humidity and treat promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Alocasia lauterbachiana Variegata is a cultivated mutation of the standard A. lauterbachiana, a species native to the tropical lowlands of Southeast Asia and New Guinea. In its natural environment, it thrives in filtered forest light with consistent warmth and humidity.
The variegated form has become a collectors favourite for its dramatic shape and painterly variegation, combining the strength of the Purple Sword with the rarity and refinement of cream-toned leaves. Like all Alocasias, it contributes to air purification, helping to filter toxins while adding an elegant, sculptural quality to interior plant collections.
