Podocarpus macrophyllus, commonly known as the Buddhist Pine or Japanese Yew, is an elegant, evergreen shrub or small tree prized for its refined appearance, architectural form, and adaptability to both indoor and outdoor settings. Native to southern Japan and China, this coniferous plant features narrow, leathery, dark green leaves that resemble yew needles but with a softer, more tropical aesthetic. The leaves grow in symmetrical spirals along upright stems, giving the plant a neat, layered look. Though technically a conifer, Podocarpus lacks traditional cones and instead produces small, fleshy fruits. Outdoors, it can be shaped into hedging, standards, or sculptural specimens, while indoors it remains compact and manageable, offering a stately alternative to more common foliage plants. With its calm, orderly presence, Podocarpus macrophyllus is well-suited to minimalist interiors, Zen gardens, conservatories, and patios delivering year-round greenery with very little fuss.
