Epipremnum aureum Marble Queen, commonly known as the Marble Queen Pothos, is one of the most decorative cultivars of the classic Golden Pothos. Belonging to the Araceae family and native to the Solomon Islands, it is loved worldwide for its lush, trailing habit and striking variegated foliage.

The Marble Queen variety is characterised by its heart-shaped leaves marbled in creamy white and green. The variegation varies from leaf to leaf, with some heavily splashed in white while others retain more green, giving the plant a dynamic and ever-changing appearance. Its compact, bushy growth habit makes it equally attractive in hanging baskets, trained onto moss poles, or cascading from shelves.

Like all pothos, Marble Queen is a hardy, forgiving plant, making it a perfect choice for both beginners and seasoned plant collectors. Its air-purifying properties and eye-catching variegation ensure it remains one of the most popular indoor houseplants.

Epipremnum aureum Marble Queen Care Guide

Light

Best in bright, indirect light to maintain its creamy variegation. Tolerates medium light, though the leaves may develop more green and less white in lower light conditions. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Watering

Allow the top 23 cm of soil to dry out before watering again. Water thoroughly, letting excess drain away, and avoid leaving the plant sitting in water. Overwatering is the most common issue and may lead to root rot. In winter, reduce watering frequency.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Thrives in 1826C. Keep away from cold draughts and avoid prolonged exposure below 12C.

  • Humidity: Tolerant of average indoor humidity but grows best with moderate to high humidity. Mist occasionally or place near a humidifier to keep leaves fresh.

Soil and Potting

Use a well-draining houseplant compost mixed with perlite or orchid bark for aeration. Repot every 12 years in spring to refresh the soil and encourage healthy growth.

Feeding

Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Feeding is unnecessary in winter.

Pruning and Training

Prune back long vines to encourage bushier growth. Marble Queen can be grown as a trailing plant or trained to climb a moss pole or trellis for larger leaves. Stem cuttings root easily in water or soil for propagation.

Growth and Maturity

A moderately fast grower, producing vines up to several metres long indoors. Variegation may become less pronounced if grown in low light, but bright conditions will maintain its marbled patterns.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Often due to overwatering.

  • Loss of variegation: Caused by insufficient light.

  • Leggy growth: A sign that the plant is stretching for more light.

  • Pests: Occasionally mealybugs, thrips, or spider mites.

Background and Benefits

The Marble Queen cultivar has been a favourite for decades, offering a classic twist on the beloved Golden Pothos with its creamy-white marbled leaves. Hardy, adaptable, and endlessly decorative, it is a staple in plant collections and interior styling worldwide.
