Philodendron Red Anderson is a rare and highly collectable hybrid philodendron prized for its bold colouring and dramatic foliage. A member of the Araceae family, it has become a sought-after plant among collectors due to its unique combination of glossy leaves and deep red to burgundy tones.

The plant produces large, broad leaves with a leathery texture, typically emerging in shades of bronze-red before maturing into darker green while retaining rich burgundy undersides. The contrasting tones give the plant a vibrant, multi-layered appearance. Its upright growth habit, supported by strong red petioles, makes it an excellent feature plant for homes and interiors where a tropical statement piece is desired.

Mature plants can reach 60100 cm tall indoors, forming a dense clump of striking foliage. Its rarity and colouration set it apart from other self-heading philodendrons, such as Imperial Red or Black Cardinal.

Philodendron Red Anderson Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Too little light can reduce its vibrant red colouring, while direct sunlight may scorch the leaves.

Watering

Water when the top 35 cm of soil feels dry. Keep soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering during winter when growth slows.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers 1828C. Protect from draughts and avoid prolonged exposure below 15C.

  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity (5070%) is ideal. Mist leaves occasionally or use a humidifier to encourage healthy growth.

Soil and Potting

Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix peat-free compost blended with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Repot every 12 years in spring to refresh the mix and support root growth.

Feeding

Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 34 weeks during spring and summer. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove yellowing or damaged leaves at the base. Wipe the large glossy foliage occasionally with a damp cloth to enhance its natural shine and aid photosynthesis.

Growth and Maturity

A moderately fast grower indoors, reaching up to 1 metre tall and wide. With maturity, the plant develops thicker stems and more intensely coloured foliage.

Common Issues

  • Loss of colour: Caused by insufficient light.

  • Yellowing leaves: Usually linked to overwatering.

  • Brown tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Pests: May occasionally attract mealybugs, spider mites, or thrips.
