Scaphochlamys scintillans Ooi is a rare and exquisite jewel ginger belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, native to the rainforests of Peninsular Malaysia. Known for its iridescent foliage and compact growth, it is a true collectors plant, admired for both its beauty and rarity.
The leaves are broad, oval to lance-shaped, and display a striking metallic sheen that shimmers under light, appearing in shades of deep green, silver, and sometimes flushed with purple or bronze undertones. This sparkling effect reflected in the name scintillans (scintillating or glittering) makes it one of the most decorative jewel gingers in cultivation.
The Ooi form is especially prized among enthusiasts for its distinctive colouring and compact habit. Like many jewel gingers, it also produces small but charming flowers close to the base, often white to pink, which contrast beautifully with the foliage. Typically, this plant stays under 2030 cm in height, making it ideal for terrariums, shaded interiors, or greenhouse collections.
Thrives in bright, indirect light or dappled shade. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its delicate leaves, while low light reduces the metallic iridescence.
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 2 cm feels slightly dry. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Temperature: Prefers 1826C. Avoid exposure below 15C.
Humidity: Requires very high humidity (7090%). Best grown in terrariums, glasshouses, or under domes where humidity is stable.
Use a light, airy, moisture-retentive but free-draining substrate a mix of fine orchid bark, peat-free compost, perlite, and sphagnum moss works well. Repot in spring when new growth emerges.
Feed every 34 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding, as the roots are delicate.
Remove any damaged or faded leaves to maintain appearance. Growth comes from rhizomes, so the plant will naturally produce new shoots seasonally.
A compact species, usually 1530 cm tall. Grows slowly and requires stable, humid conditions to thrive. Produces basal flowers close to the soil level.
Leaf browning/crisping: Low humidity or excessive light.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Pests: Occasionally susceptible to thrips or spider mites if grown in very dry conditions.
The Scaphochlamys genus is a small group of jewel gingers native to Southeast Asia. They are admired for their metallic and iridescent foliage rather than flowers. S. scintillans Ooi is particularly rare in cultivation and sought after by collectors of unusual tropical plants. Its sparkling leaves make it a true living jewel.
