Clusia rosea Green Magic, also known as the Autograph Tree, is a striking tropical evergreen prized for its thick, glossy foliage and contemporary look. Green Magic is a cultivated form of Clusia rosea selected for its particularly lush, dark green leaves and compact, uniform growth, making it ideal for modern interiors and tropical-themed spaces.

Key Features:

  • Foliage: Large, leathery, oval-shaped leaves are a rich, deep green, with a slightly waxy feel. The nickname Autograph Tree comes from the tradition of scratching messages into the thick leaves, which then scar and remain visible.

  • Growth Habit: Forms a bushy, upright shrub or small tree, typically growing up to 1.52 metres indoors over time. Its neat, symmetrical branching gives a full, structured look.

  • Flowers & Fruit: In tropical climates, mature Clusia may produce star-shaped pinkish-white flowers followed by ornamental green fruits that split open to reveal red seeds. Indoors, flowering is rare.

Because of its architectural foliage and ease of care, Clusia Green Magic is popular in designer interiors, offices and hotels, often used as a statement plant.

Detailed Care Guide for Clusia rosea Green Magic

Position & Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates some direct sun (especially morning or late afternoon), which helps maintain compact growth.

  • Will tolerate moderate shade but may grow more slowly and become leggier.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Thrives in typical room temperatures (1828C).

  • Keep above 15C; avoid cold draughts or sudden temperature drops.

  • Prefers moderate humidity. Occasional misting or placing near other plants helps, especially in centrally heated homes.

Watering

  • Likes soil to be lightly moist, but not soggy.

  • Water when the top 23 cm of compost feels dry.

  • Reduce watering in winter. Always empty saucers so the roots do not sit in water, as Clusia dislikes waterlogged soil.

Soil

  • Prefers a well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral compost.

  • A peat-free multipurpose compost with added perlite or bark chips for drainage works well.

Feeding

  • Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser.

  • No feeding is needed in autumn and winter.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Responds very well to pruning, making it easy to shape or keep compact.

  • Trim back leggy growth in spring or early summer.

  • Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep them glossy.

Pests & Problems

  • Generally pest-resistant and robust.

  • May very occasionally be troubled by scale insects or mealybugs wipe leaves and treat with horticultural soap if needed.

  • Yellowing leaves often indicate overwatering or poor drainage.

Container Growing & Repotting

  • Grow in a pot with drainage holes and raise on feet to prevent waterlogging.

  • Repot every 23 years in spring, moving into a slightly larger container each time.
