Hoya sp. Aceh Long Leaf is a rare, locality-specific Hoya discovered in the Aceh region of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. Like many Hoyas collected under locality names, it is yet to be fully classified but is prized by collectors for its distinct foliage and exotic blooms.
The plant produces strikingly long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves much more elongated than most Hoyas giving it a refined and elegant appearance. The leaves are leathery, deep green, and often display subtle silver flecking across their surface. Its vining habit makes it perfect for hanging baskets, trailing displays, or climbing up a trellis.
When mature, Hoya sp. Aceh Long Leaf produces umbels of star-shaped, waxy flowers. Typically creamy-white to pale pink with a darker centre, the blooms are highly fragrant, particularly in the evening. The contrast of elegant leaves and sweetly scented flowers makes this Hoya a superb choice for rare plant collectors.
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Tolerates a few hours of soft morning sun, but avoid harsh midday sun which may scorch foliage. Insufficient light reduces flowering.
Water when the top 23 cm of soil feels dry. Like most Hoyas, it dislikes waterlogging but should not be left dry for long periods. Reduce watering slightly in winter.
Temperature: Prefers 1828C. Protect from draughts and temperatures below 15C.
Humidity: Benefits from higher humidity (6080%) but adapts well to average indoor levels. Mist occasionally in dry homes.
Use a chunky, airy, free-draining mix orchid bark, perlite, coco husk, and a little peat-free compost. Hoyas like to be slightly root-bound, so repot every 23 years.
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a high-potassium fertiliser to encourage blooms. Stop feeding in winter.
Prune to manage length and encourage branching. Do not remove peduncles (flower spurs), as Hoyas rebloom from the same sites year after year.
A moderate to fast grower, producing long, trailing vines. Flowers appear once the plant is mature and growing in bright conditions.
No flowers: Insufficient light or removal of peduncles.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Leaf shrivelling: Extended underwatering.
Pests: Occasionally mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites.
Hoyas identified by locality, such as sp. Aceh Long Leaf, are especially popular among collectors because of their uniqueness and potential to represent new or distinct species. With its long, elegant leaves and fragrant blooms, this form is one of the more visually striking Hoyas from Sumatra.
