Like other Hoyas, it is part of the Apocynaceae family and is admired for its colourful, variegated foliage and fragrant clusters of star-shaped flowers.
The Krimson Queen Splash variety is a sport of the classic Krimson Queen, but with an extra flourish: in addition to its creamy-white to pink margins, the leaf centres are decorated with irregular silver flecking and splashes. This gives each leaf a shimmering, painterly effect, making the plant truly unique. Some leaves may be heavily splashed, while others display subtle freckles every vine develops its own pattern.
Mature plants trail beautifully from hanging baskets or can be trained to climb a trellis. When established, they produce umbels of pink starry flowers with red centres, which are sweetly fragrant and long-lasting.
Thrives in bright, indirect light. The variegation and silver splash are most pronounced in strong filtered light. A few hours of soft morning or late-afternoon sun are beneficial. Avoid harsh midday sun, which may scorch pale margins.
Water when the top 23 cm of soil feels dry. As a semi-succulent, the plant stores water in its leaves, so it is tolerant of slight drought but dislikes soggy conditions. Reduce watering during winter.
Temperature: Best in 1828C. Protect from draughts and cold below 15C.
Humidity: Average household humidity is acceptable, but the plant thrives in 5070%. Increased humidity also encourages flowering.
Use a chunky, airy, free-draining mix orchid bark, perlite, coco husk, and a little compost works well. Hoyas prefer being slightly root-bound, so repot only every 23 years.
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser, switching to a high-potassium formula when encouraging blooms.
Prune to manage trailing vines and encourage branching. Never remove the flower peduncles (spurs), as Hoyas bloom from the same sites year after year.
A moderate grower with vines that can trail 12 m indoors. Flowers reliably appear on mature plants given bright light and stable conditions.
