Labisia pumila, commonly known as Kacip Fatimah, is a small, tropical understory plant native to the rainforests of Malaysia, Indonesia, and other parts of Southeast Asia. A member of the Primulaceae family (formerly Myrsinaceae), this species is highly valued both as an ornamental foliage plant and for its traditional medicinal properties.
The plant forms a compact rosette of glossy, dark green leaves with prominent, lighter green veins and slightly serrated edges. The leaves are thick and leathery, often displaying a subtle reddish tint on the undersides, especially in bright, indirect light. Mature plants may produce small clusters of pale pink to white flowers along slender stalks that rise just above the foliage.
In its natural habitat, Labisia pumila thrives beneath dense rainforest canopies, where the air is warm and humid, and the light is soft and filtered. Its compact, elegant form makes it an excellent choice for terrariums, tropical plant arrangements, or as a standalone feature in indoor collections.
Prefers bright, indirect light or dappled shade. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light may slow growth and dull the plants natural gloss. East-facing windows or shaded areas with consistent brightness work best.
Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy. Water when the top 23 cm of soil feels slightly dry, using filtered or rainwater if possible. The plant dislikes standing water ensure the pot drains freely. Reduce watering in cooler months while maintaining gentle moisture.
Temperature: Thrives in warmth between 2030 C and should be protected from cold drafts or sudden temperature drops below 15 C.
Humidity: High humidity (6080%) is essential to replicate its natural rainforest environment. Mist regularly, use a humidifier, or place it among other tropical plants to maintain moisture in the air.
Use a rich, airy, and well-draining mix a combination of compost, perlite, coco coir, and a little orchid bark works beautifully. Repot every 12 years in spring to refresh the mix and encourage steady growth. Labisia pumila prefers a slightly acidic soil (pH 5.56.5).
Feed every 46 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Over-fertilising can damage the roots or cause leaf edge browning. Suspend feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.
Trim older or damaged leaves near the base to maintain a compact appearance and stimulate new growth. Wipe leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and preserve their shine.
A slow-growing species, Labisia pumila typically reaches 2030 cm in height and spread. It forms dense clumps over time and may produce small, inconspicuous flowers if given ideal conditions.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Brown edges: Low humidity or excessive fertiliser.
Drooping leaves: Underwatering or cold air exposure.
Pests: Occasionally affected by thrips or spider mites treat with neem oil and maintain humidity.
Labisia pumila has long been used in traditional Malaysian and Indonesian herbal medicine, particularly by women for its reputed health benefits related to vitality, hormonal balance, and postpartum recovery. Known locally as Kacip Fatimah, it is often compared to Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) in its cultural importance, though it is used for different wellness purposes.
As an ornamental, it brings exotic beauty and texture to tropical-themed plant collections. Its glossy, richly coloured foliage and compact growth habit make it ideal for terrariums, vivariums, or small indoor gardens.
