Hoya clemensiorum is a truly spectacular and rare Hoya species, native to Sabah, Borneo. It is regarded as one of the most striking Hoyas in cultivation, admired for its extraordinary foliage and dramatic veining rather than just its blooms.

The leaves are very large, leathery, and elongated, often reaching 2025 cm in length. They are a deep emerald-green, beautifully patterned with intricate pale green to silvery-white venation that runs dramatically across the surface. The strong contrast between veins and leaf blade gives it a highly ornamental, almost hand-painted look.

When mature, Hoya clemensiorum produces umbels of star-shaped flowers, typically creamy to light green with a darker corona. Although the flowers are attractive and fragrant, the foliage is the true showstopper of this species, making it a grail plant for serious Hoya collectors.

Hoya clemensiorum Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Too little light reduces the definition of the venation, while harsh direct sun may scorch the leaves. A few hours of soft morning sun are beneficial.

Watering

Water when the top 23 cm of soil feels dry. The thick leaves store water, so it is more tolerant of slight drought than waterlogging. In winter, reduce watering.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers 1828C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid prolonged exposure below 15C.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (6080%) to thrive. Use a humidifier, pebble trays, or grow in a greenhouse-style cabinet.

Soil and Potting

Use a chunky, airy, free-draining epiphytic mix: orchid bark, perlite, coco husk, and some peat-free compost. Hoyas prefer to be slightly root-bound, so repot only every 23 years.

Feeding

Feed monthly in spring and summer with a high-potassium fertiliser to support both foliage health and blooms. Stop feeding in winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune to manage vine length and encourage branching. Do not remove flower peduncles (spurs), as blooms return from the same sites year after year.

Growth and Maturity

A slow-growing vine that rewards patience. Mature leaves become larger and more dramatically veined as the plant establishes itself.

Common Issues

  • Faded venation: Insufficient light.

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Brown tips: Low humidity.

  • Pests: Occasionally susceptible to mealybugs, thrips, or spider mites.

Background and Benefits

Hoya clemensiorum is named after botanist Dr. Joseph Clemens, who contributed greatly to the study of Asian flora. Among Hoyas, it is considered one of the most beautiful foliage species thanks to its bold venation. While its flowers are charming, its leaves are the true reason it is highly sought-after by collectors worldwide.
