Hoya scortechinii is an elegant and delicate tropical species cherished for its small, glossy foliage and profuse clusters of sweetly scented blooms. Native to the humid rainforests of Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore, this charming Hoya grows as an epiphyte on trees, thriving in shaded, moisture-rich environments.
The plant features thin, wiry vines with small, oval, deep-green leaves that develop a soft sheen under bright light. Its growth habit is compact yet vigorous, making it ideal for hanging planters or terrarium-style displays. When mature, Hoya scortechinii produces dense umbels of tiny, waxy, white to cream-coloured flowers with pink centres, each releasing a light, honey-like fragrance in the evening.
Graceful, prolific, and subtly refined, Hoya scortechinii is a must-have species for collectors seeking a miniature, free-blooming Hoya that exudes quiet tropical beauty.
Prefers bright, indirect light. Filtered sunlight through sheer curtains or dappled morning sun enhances leaf gloss and encourages flowering. Avoid harsh midday rays, which can scorch the delicate foliage, and very low light, which will reduce bloom frequency.
Allow the top 23 cm of soil to dry before watering again. Hoya scortechinii appreciates light, consistent moisture but dislikes sitting in water. During the growing season (spring and summer), water thoroughly and let excess drain away. In winter, reduce watering frequency while keeping the roots lightly moist.
Temperature: Prefers warm conditions between 2030C; protect from cold draughts and temperatures below 15C.
Humidity: Enjoys moderate to high humidity (6085%). Mist occasionally or use a humidifier, especially in drier indoor climates.
Use a light, well-aerated mix a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or sphagnum moss is ideal. This mimics the airy, moisture-retentive conditions of its native epiphytic habitat. Terracotta pots work well to allow natural drying between waterings. Repot every 23 years in spring to refresh the mix and prevent compaction.
Feed every 46 weeks during the growing season with a diluted, balanced fertiliser or a bloom-boosting formula higher in phosphorus. Suspend feeding in autumn and winter when the plants growth slows.
Prune lightly to maintain shape and encourage branching. Avoid removing peduncles (flower spurs) after blooms fade, as new flowers will form from the same spurs each season. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep their natural shine.
A moderate to fast grower with slender, trailing vines that can reach 11.5 metres in length indoors. Mature plants flower prolifically, producing multiple umbels of delicate blooms each year. The compact foliage and fine texture make it an ideal candidate for hanging baskets, small trellises, or cascading shelf displays.
Yellow leaves: Overwatering or cold exposure.
Wrinkled leaves: Underwatering or low humidity.
No flowers: Insufficient light or removal of flower spurs.
Pests: Occasionally mealybugs or spider mites; treat promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Hoya scortechinii was first described in the 19th century and named in honour of the Italian botanist Benedetto Scortechini, who collected extensively in Southeast Asia. This species is widespread across Malaysia, Thailand, and parts of Indonesia, where it grows as an epiphyte in humid forest canopies, clinging to tree trunks and branches under filtered sunlight.
Its delicate flowers and adaptable growth habit make it a favourite among collectors of miniature Hoyas. Despite its refined appearance, H. scortechinii is remarkably resilient and can thrive in typical household conditions when humidity is sufficient. Like other Hoyas, it also serves as a natural air purifier, improving air quality while adding a subtle tropical touch to interiors.
Light: Bright, indirect light; gentle morning sun preferred
Water: Let top 23 cm of soil dry before watering
Temperature: 2030C; avoid below 15C
Humidity: Moderate to high (6085%)
Soil: Airy, free-draining mix bark, perlite, coco coir
Feed: Every 46 weeks in spring/summer
Growth: Trailing or climbing habit, 11.5 m; small glossy leaves and white-pink fragrant blooms
Toxicity note: Contains mild latex sap that may irritate skin and is toxic if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
Display Hoya scortechinii in a hanging pot, wall-mounted planter, or trailing from a high shelf, where its fine foliage and flower clusters can cascade naturally. Its compact size makes it ideal for terrariums or small spaces, and it pairs beautifully with other miniature Hoyas such as Hoya krohniana Silver or Hoya lacunosa Tove. For a refined tropical aesthetic, position it in a bright room with filtered light, allowing the subtle beauty of its leaves and blooms to take centre stage.
