Sansevieria zeylanica, also known as the Ceylon Bowstring Hemp, is a striking, hardy succulent belonging to the Asparagaceae family. Native to Sri Lanka and southern India, this species is loved for its sword-like leaves and near-indestructible nature, making it one of the most dependable and stylish houseplants available.
The plant forms upright clumps of long, tapering leaves marked with wavy, grey-green horizontal banding over a deep green background. Each leaf is thick, leathery, and glossy, growing in a fan-like arrangement that gives the plant a clean, architectural look. Mature plants may produce tall spikes of small, fragrant, white-green flowers, though it is primarily grown for its bold foliage.
Elegant, minimalistic, and exceptionally low-maintenance, Sansevieria zeylanica is perfect for both modern and traditional interiors, thriving in almost any lighting or watering conditions.
Thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates medium and low-light environments, making it one of the most adaptable indoor plants. It also tolerates some gentle direct sun but avoid prolonged exposure to harsh midday rays.
Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In summer, water every 23 weeks; in winter, once a month or less. Overwatering is the most common cause of issues this drought-tolerant plant stores water in its thick leaves and rhizomes.
Temperature: Prefers warmth, 1828C. Can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 10C if kept dry.
Humidity: Prefers dry air and requires no misting ideal for centrally heated homes.
Use a gritty, free-draining cactus or succulent compost. A terracotta pot with drainage holes is ideal to prevent excess moisture. Repot every 23 years in spring to refresh the soil and divide offsets (pups).
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertiliser. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.
Remove old or damaged leaves at the base. Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to keep their surface clean and glossy.
A slow to moderate grower that can reach 6090 cm tall. It grows from underground rhizomes and will gradually form attractive clumps of upright leaves.
Yellow or mushy leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Wrinkled leaves: Underwatering water thoroughly, then allow to dry out.
Faded colour: Too little light.
Pests: Rare, but may occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites.
