Epipremnum pinnatum Ghostie is a rare and collectable cultivar of the popular Epipremnum pinnatum, celebrated for its shimmering pale variegation and striking foliage. Native to tropical Asia and the Pacific islands, Epipremnum pinnatum belongs to the Araceae family and is known for its versatility as a trailing or climbing plant.
The Ghostie variety produces elongated, lance-shaped leaves with a distinctive silvery-white to pale mint colouring that appears almost luminous under the light. Young foliage often emerges a pale green before maturing into soft ghostly tones, hence the name. With age and when provided with a climbing support such as a moss pole, the leaves can develop fenestrations (splits), creating a dramatic, tropical effect.
Compact when young but vigorous as it matures, Ghostie is equally attractive trailing from a shelf or trained to climb vertically. Its unique pale foliage makes it an exceptional feature plant and a must-have for rare plant collectors.
Thrives in bright, indirect light to maintain its pale colouring. It tolerates medium light but may revert to greener tones in low light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the delicate variegated leaves.
Water when the top 23 cm of soil feels dry. Keep evenly moist in spring and summer, but allow good drainage to prevent root rot. Reduce watering in autumn and winter as growth slows.
Temperature: Best in 1828C. Protect from draughts and avoid prolonged cold below 15C.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (5070%). Occasional misting, pebble trays, or a humidifier will help maintain healthy foliage.
Use a chunky, free-draining aroid mix peat-free compost blended with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Repot every 12 years in spring to refresh the soil and allow space for growth.
Feed every 4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding in winter.
Prune to control length and encourage bushiness. Train up a moss pole or trellis to promote larger, fenestrated leaves. Cuttings propagate easily in water, moss, or soil.
A moderately fast grower that can trail or climb several metres indoors. Leaves become larger and more dramatic with fenestrations when mature and supported vertically.
Loss of pale colour: Usually caused by insufficient light.
Yellowing leaves: Often due to overwatering or poor drainage.
Brown leaf tips: Linked to low humidity or inconsistent watering.
Pests: Occasionally spider mites, thrips, or mealybugs.
The Ghostie cultivar is especially valued for its luminous pale foliage, which sets it apart from other Epipremnum varieties. Its versatility as both a trailing and climbing plant makes it suitable for a range of interiors, while its unusual colouring ensures it remains a highlight in any plant collection.
