The Golden Radermachera is a rare and decorative cultivar of the Radermachera genus, belonging to the Bignoniaceae family. While Radermachera sinica (the China Doll Plant) is the most familiar species, the golden-leaved form is especially admired for its luminous foliage and compact growth habit.
The plant produces finely divided, glossy, pinnate leaves that are suffused with golden to lime-green tones rather than the deep emerald of the standard species. This variegation gives the plant a lighter, glowing quality, making it an ideal feature plant for bright interiors. When mature, its delicate fern-like canopy and soft golden hues create an elegant, airy display.
In its natural environment, Radermachera can grow into a small tree, but as a potted indoor specimen, the Golden variety typically grows 60120 cm tall, maintaining a bushy, manageable habit.
Thrives in bright, indirect light to maintain its golden colouring. Tolerates medium light but foliage may darken to green. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch delicate leaves.
Keep the soil evenly moist, watering when the top 23 cm feels dry. Do not allow the plant to sit in water, as its fine roots are prone to rot. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Temperature: Prefers 1826C. Protect from draughts and avoid prolonged cold below 15C.
Humidity: Appreciates moderate to high humidity. Mist occasionally or group with other plants to prevent leaf crisping.
Use a light, well-draining peat-free compost enriched with perlite or sand. Repot every 12 years in spring to refresh the mix and encourage healthy growth.
Feed every 23 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding in winter.
Prune lightly to maintain a bushy shape and encourage branching. Remove yellowing or damaged foliage to keep the plant looking fresh.
Indoors, the Golden Radermachera forms a compact shrub-like plant up to 1.2 metres tall. With regular pruning and care, it stays dense and decorative.
Leaf drop: Often due to underwatering, low humidity, or sudden environmental changes.
Brown tips: Usually linked to dry air or inconsistent watering.
Pests: May occasionally attract aphids, scale, or spider mites.
The Radermachera genus is native to Asia and includes ornamental trees and shrubs often used in landscaping. The golden-leaved form is cultivated specifically for indoor use and is prized for its bright, cheerful foliage. It is often grown as an alternative to ferns, offering a similar soft texture but greater resilience.
