Hoya crassipetiolata Splash is a stunning and highly collectable cultivar of the Hoya crassipetiolata species, admired for its bold foliage and fragrant blooms. Native to Southeast Asia, this species belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is closely related to other speckled Hoyas like Hoya pubicalyx and Hoya obovata.
The leaves are large, elongated, and slightly leathery, with strong venation. In the Splash form, the surface is generously speckled and freckled with shimmering silver, giving the foliage a misted, painted effect. Some leaves are lightly dotted, while others are almost entirely silver, making each one unique.
When mature, Hoya crassipetiolata Splash produces umbels of waxy, star-shaped flowers. The blooms are creamy-white with a soft pink to purple centre, exuding a sweet fragrance that intensifies in the evenings. Its climbing or trailing habit makes it ideal for hanging baskets, trellises, or decorative pots where both its foliage and flowers can be admired.
Thrives in bright, indirect light. A few hours of soft morning or late-afternoon sun helps intensify silver flecking and promote flowering. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Water when the top 23 cm of soil feels dry. As a semi-succulent, this Hoya tolerates short dry periods but dislikes soggy soil. Reduce watering slightly in winter.
Temperature: Prefers 1828C. Protect from draughts and avoid exposure below 15C.
Humidity: Benefits from moderate to high humidity (5070%). Adaptable to household conditions but will grow more lushly in higher humidity.
Use a chunky, airy, free-draining epiphytic mix orchid bark, perlite, coco husk, and a little peat-free compost is ideal. Repot only every 23 years, as Hoyas bloom better when slightly root-bound.
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser. Switch to a high-potassium fertiliser when encouraging blooms. No feeding is required in winter.
Prune vines lightly to control length and encourage branching. Do not remove flower peduncles (spurs), as Hoyas rebloom from the same sites year after year.
A moderately fast grower, developing long trailing or climbing stems. Mature plants flower reliably when grown in bright light and stable conditions.
No blooms: Usually due to insufficient light or removal of peduncles.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poorly draining soil.
Leaf shrivelling: Extended underwatering.
Pests: May occasionally attract mealybugs, thrips, or spider mites.
Hoya crassipetiolata is becoming increasingly popular among collectors thanks to its striking silver-speckled foliage and abundant flowering. The Splash cultivar is especially sought after, combining ornamental leaves with sweetly scented blooms for a plant that looks spectacular year-round.
