Alocasia baginda Dragon Scale Mint is a rare and highly sought-after cultivar of the jewel Alocasia group, prized for its unusual minty-green variegation. Native to the tropical rainforests of Borneo, Alocasia baginda species are known for their thick, textured leaves that resemble dragon scales hence the common name.

The Mint variety retains the dramatic, armour-like structure of the classic Dragon Scale but overlays it with a frosted, mint-green variegation. Each leaf is heavily veined in darker green, creating an embossed appearance, while the lighter minty marbling softens the overall look. The undersides of the leaves are typically pale silvery-green, adding contrast when viewed from different angles.

Compact and dramatic, this Alocasia usually reaches 3040 cm tall indoors, making it an ideal statement plant for shelves, desks, or grouped foliage displays. Its unusual texture and colouration make it a prized addition to rare plant collections.

Alocasia baginda Dragon Scale Mint Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Too little light will reduce vibrancy, while harsh direct sun may scorch the minty foliage.

Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist during the growing season, watering when the top 23 cm feels dry. Do not allow the plant to sit in water, as Alocasias are prone to root rot. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers 1828C. Avoid draughts and never allow exposure below 15C.

  • Humidity: Requires high humidity (60%+). Mist gently, use a humidifier, or place on a pebble tray to replicate its tropical environment.

Soil and Potting

Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix peat-free compost blended with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir is ideal. Repot every 12 years in spring to refresh the mix and accommodate root growth.

Feeding

Feed every 23 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced fertiliser. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove yellowing or damaged leaves promptly at the base. Wipe foliage occasionally with a damp cloth to keep the textured leaves dust-free.

Growth and Dormancy

A compact grower, reaching 3040 cm in height and spread. Like many Alocasias, it may enter dormancy in cooler months, during which foliage can die back. If this happens, reduce watering and wait for fresh growth in spring.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Crispy edges: Low humidity.

  • Loss of vibrancy: Insufficient light.

  • Pests: May attract spider mites, thrips, or mealybugs inspect regularly.

Background and Benefits

The Dragon Scale group of Alocasias is admired worldwide for its exotic, textured leaves. The Mint variegated form is especially collectable for its soft, frosted tones that contrast with the bold veining. Its compact size and striking appearance make it both manageable and impressive as a houseplant.
