Dieffenbachia Snowflake is a beautiful cultivar of the Dieffenbachia genus (commonly called Dumb Cane), belonging to the Araceae family. Native to tropical regions of Central and South America, Dieffenbachias are prized for their bold, patterned foliage and tolerance of indoor conditions.
The Snowflake variety is particularly eye-catching. Its large, oval leaves are a rich green background overlaid with heavy splashes and speckles of creamy white, giving the impression of falling snow across the foliage. The marbled effect varies from leaf to leaf, making each one unique. As the plant matures, it develops strong, upright stems with a crown of lush leaves, forming a bushy, tropical display.
Indoors, Dieffenbachia Snowflake typically grows to 60120 cm in height, making it an excellent floor plant for brightening corners or adding a touch of the tropics to living spaces.
Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain vivid variegation. Tolerates medium light but too little light will dull the snowy markings. Avoid direct sunlight, which may scorch the leaves.
Water when the top 35 cm of soil feels dry. Keep soil lightly moist in spring and summer, but avoid waterlogging. Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
Temperature: Thrives in 1826C. Protect from draughts and cold temperatures below 15C.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Mist occasionally or use a humidifier if air is very dry.
Use a rich, well-draining houseplant compost with added perlite for aeration. Repot every 12 years in spring to refresh soil and provide room for growth.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4 weeks during spring and summer. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.
Remove yellowing or damaged leaves at the base. Wipe foliage occasionally with a damp cloth to highlight its marbled patterns.
A steady grower indoors, reaching up to 1.2 m with proper care. As it ages, older leaves may drop, revealing a cane-like stem topped with fresh foliage.
Yellowing leaves: Often from overwatering or poor drainage.
Crisp edges: Low humidity or underwatering.
Faded variegation: Too little light.
Pests: Can be susceptible to spider mites, aphids, or mealybugs.
Dieffenbachias have been a favourite houseplant for generations, valued for their exotic foliage and easy-going nature. The Snowflake cultivar is especially decorative, with its snowy speckles creating a striking contrast against rich green leaves. It makes an ideal choice for interiors that need a bold yet elegant tropical statement.
