Ficus microcarpa ‘Compacta’

Ficus microcarpa ‘Compacta’, also known as Compact Chinese Banyan, is a dense, miniature cultivar of the well-known Ficus microcarpa. It is cherished for its thick, glossy, dark green leaves, tightly packed on short internodes, giving the plant a neat, bonsai-like appearance even without pruning. The growth habit is naturally rounded and bushy, making it an excellent choice for indoor plant styling, especially where space is limited.

Its woody stems, aerial roots, and potential for shaping have made it popular in bonsai circles, but even left untrained, Compacta forms a sculptural and tidy silhouette. Its one of the easiest ficus varieties to care for indoors, tolerating a range of conditions while bringing a strong architectural aesthetic.

Ficus microcarpa ‘Compacta’ Comprehensive Care Guide

Light Requirements

  • Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Can tolerate some direct morning or late afternoon sun, but avoid harsh midday exposure.

  • Will survive in medium light, but growth may slow and internodes may stretch.

  • Too little light may cause leaf drop.

Watering

  • Water when the top 23cm of soil feels dry.

  • In spring and summer: water every 710 days depending on temperature and light.

  • In autumn and winter: reduce watering to every 1014 days.

  • Never allow the plant to sit in soggy soil ensure the pot has good drainage.

Humidity

  • Prefers moderate humidity (4060%), but adapts well to typical UK indoor levels.

  • During winter or in dry indoor environments, increase humidity by:

    • Light misting,

    • Using a pebble tray,

    • Or grouping with other plants.

Temperature

  • Thrives in temperatures between 1626C.

  • Protect from draughts and avoid placing near radiators or cold windows.

  • Do not expose to temperatures below 10C this may cause leaf drop.

Soil

  • Use a well-draining houseplant mix with added perlite or grit to prevent compaction.

  • A mix of peat-free compost, orchid bark, and perlite works well.

  • For bonsai-style cultivation, use a specialised bonsai soil.

Feeding

  • Feed every 46 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser.

  • Reduce feeding in autumn and stop entirely during winter dormancy.

Pruning & Shaping

  • Easily pruned to maintain a compact, tidy shape or to develop a bonsai form.

  • Best pruned in early spring or summer when active growth begins.

  • Remove dead or yellowing leaves regularly.

Repotting

  • Repot every 23 years to refresh soil and allow for root development.

  • For bonsai-style plants, root pruning can be done when repotting.

  • Use a pot just slightly larger than the root ball with good drainage.

Pests & Problems

  • May attract:

    • Spider mites, scale insects, or mealybugs especially in dry conditions.

  • Yellowing or dropping leaves often indicate:

    • Overwatering, cold stress, or low light.

  • Generally pest-resistant when kept in optimal conditions.

Toxicity

  • Mildly toxic to pets and humans if ingested (sap contains irritating compounds).

  • Keep out of reach of children and animals.

Top Tips for Success

  • Turn the pot regularly to promote even growth and prevent leaning.
