Unlike climbing philodendrons, this variety grows as a rosette from a central base, making it an excellent statement plant for smaller spaces.
The foliage is the main attraction. New leaves unfurl in shades of deep burgundy to rich chocolate brown before maturing to an almost black-green with a glossy sheen. The thick, leathery leaves are broadly oval with smooth edges, creating a bold, architectural form. As the plant grows, the contrast between fresh red-burgundy leaves and older dark ones produces a constantly evolving display of colour.
Typically, Philodendron Black Cardinal reaches 6090 cm in height indoors, making it more manageable than many other self-heading philodendrons such as Philodendron Imperial Red. Its striking colour palette and relatively low maintenance make it a favourite for modern interiors and collectors of unusual foliage plants.
Thrives in bright, indirect light but also tolerates medium light levels. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which may scorch the dark leaves, but ensure enough light to keep the foliage glossy and vibrant.
