Philodendron Florida Green is a bold and exotic hybrid from the Araceae family, renowned for its deeply lobed leaves and vigorous climbing habit. Believed to be a cross between Philodendron squamiferum and Philodendron pedatum, this tropical aroid showcases the best of both parents sculptural foliage, elegant growth, and ease of care.
The plants glossy, green leaves are deeply divided into multiple lobes, with a unique shape that evolves as the plant matures. Juvenile leaves are smaller and simpler, while mature ones become larger, more intricate, and deeply lobed, creating a dramatic, architectural look. Its slender petioles support each leaf on a vining stem that climbs readily with the help of aerial roots.
When given vertical support such as a moss pole or climbing board, Philodendron Florida Green develops impressive leaves up to 3045 cm long, making it an outstanding statement piece in tropical plant collections or interior spaces.
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Too little light will slow growth and reduce leaf size, while harsh direct sunlight can scorch the glossy foliage.
Water when the top 23 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering slightly in winter when growth slows.
Temperature: Prefers warmth, 1828C. Protect from draughts and cold below 15C.
Humidity: Moderate to high humidity (6080%) encourages lush growth and prevents browning leaf edges.
Use a chunky, free-draining aroid mix peat-free compost enriched with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir is ideal. Repot every 12 years in spring to refresh the mix and allow for root expansion.
Feed every 23 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding in autumn and winter.
Prune lightly to manage size and encourage branching. Remove yellowing or damaged leaves at the base. Train onto a moss pole or trellis to support vertical growth and maximise leaf size.
A fast-growing climber, capable of reaching 12 metres indoors. With good care, leaves become larger and more deeply lobed with maturity.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Leggy growth: Insufficient light.
Brown tips: Low humidity.
Pests: Occasionally thrips, mealybugs, or spider mites.
Philodendron Florida Green is a hybrid variety that has become a modern favourite among aroid collectors. Its deeply lobed leaves and robust nature make it ideal for adding tropical flair to any space. Like other philodendrons, it is also known for its air-purifying qualities, helping to improve indoor air quality while providing a lush green focal point.
