Bulnesia arborea Vera Wood / Maracaibo Lignum Vitae

Bulnesia arborea, commonly known as Vera Wood, is a beautiful and lesser-known tropical tree native to northern South America, particularly Venezuela and Colombia. Closely related to the famous Guaiacum species (true Lignum Vitae), Bulnesia arborea is often referred to as Maracaibo Lignum Vitae for its highly valued, dense, resinous timber and fine grain. But beyond its timber use, its an outstanding ornamental plant with glossy, pinnate foliage and small, fragrant yellow flowers that bloom in abundance during the warmer months. The leaves are composed of numerous small, oval leaflets that create a delicate, airy canopy, while the bark is attractively textured and greyish in tone. Though primarily used as a shade tree in tropical landscapes, when grown in containers Bulnesia arborea can be trained and pruned into a handsome specimen with a refined, bonsai-like character. Its a superb plant for collectors, exotic garden displays, and anyone seeking an elegant, under-the-radar tree species.

Light Requirements

  • Outdoors: Prefers full sun for best growth and flowering. Tolerates partial shade but may flower less.

  • Indoors/conservatory: Requires very bright light; best in a sunroom, orangery, or under grow lights.

  • Too little light: Can result in weak growth, fewer flowers, and leaf drop.

Temperature & Hardiness

  • Ideal temperature: 2230C (7286F)

  • Minimum temperature: Keep above 10C (50F); not frost-hardy

  • Hardiness: USDA Zones 1011; grow in containers in the UK and bring indoors over winter

  • Humidity: Prefers moderate humidity but adapts well to average indoor conditions

Watering Needs

  • Watering frequency: Water when the top 35 cm of soil is dry. Maintain consistent moisture during active growth.

  • Drought tolerance: Once established, moderately drought-tolerant outdoors.

  • Winter: Water sparingly if overwintering indoors in cooler temperatures.

Soil & Repotting

  • Soil type: Well-draining, sandy loam or cactus compost with added organic matter.

  • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.07.0)

  • Repotting: Every 23 years, or when rootbound. Use a heavy pot for outdoor placement to prevent tipping.

Feeding

  • Growing season (springsummer): Feed every 46 weeks with a balanced fertiliser or slow-release pellets.

  • Autumnwinter: Pause feeding during dormancy or minimal growth.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Pruning: Responds well to shaping. Prune after flowering to encourage compact form and branching.

  • Leaf care: Naturally tidy remove any dead leaves or spent flowers as needed.

  • Growth rate: Moderate to fast in ideal conditions; slower in pots or lower light.

Propagation

  • By seed: Best sown fresh. Germination requires warmth and patience.

  • Cuttings: Possible but less common use semi-hardwood in warm, humid conditions.

Pests & Problems

  • Generally pest-free: May occasionally attract aphids or scale when stressed indoors.

  • Treatment: Wipe affected areas and treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.

  • Common issues:

    • Yellowing leaves: Typically caused by overwatering or low light.

    • Sparse growth: Often a result of underfeeding or root congestion in pots.

Toxicity & Safety

  • Toxicity: No known toxicity to pets or humans.

  • Handling note: The resin-rich wood has a faint aromatic scent, which may be noticeable when pruning.

Indoor & Outdoor Care Highlights

  • An unusual, graceful tree for tropical garden displays, bonsai enthusiasts, or specimen container planting.

  • Perfect for collectors and those looking for something beyond the usual tropical foliage.

  • Works well in a sun-drenched conservatory or greenhouse in cooler climates.

  • Can be styled as a small standard or kept low and bushy through pruning.

  • A great talking point plant with attractive foliage, fragrant flowers, and refined structure.
