Acer palmatum dissectum Crimson Queen is one of the most popular and reliable lace-leaf Japanese maples, loved for its finely dissected foliage, rich colour that holds all season, and elegant cascading habit. Unlike many red Japanese maples that fade to green or bronze by midsummer, Crimson Queen keeps its deep crimson tones from spring right through to autumn, making it a standout choice.
Foliage: Deeply cut, lace-like leaves emerge a vivid crimson red in spring, hold a consistent deep red to burgundy through summer, and then turn brilliant scarlet in autumn, enhancing its long seasonal appeal.
Habit: Forms a beautiful weeping, mounding shrub with gracefully arching branches, typically reaching 1.22 metres high with a broader spread up to 2.53 metres, creating a stunning dome of cascading foliage.
Bark: Smooth grey stems provide subtle winter interest and maintain a clean silhouette once the leaves have fallen.
Perfect as a specimen tree by water features, in rock gardens, on raised beds where its branches can spill naturally, or in Japanese-inspired garden designs.
Prefers partial shade or dappled sunlight.
Can handle some morning sun, which enhances the red colour, but needs protection from hot afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch.
Always place in a sheltered spot, away from cold, drying winds.
Important to avoid exposed, windy sites.
Strong winds can shred the delicate leaves and cause browning at the tips.
Likes soil to be consistently moist but well-drained.
Water regularly during dry periods, especially when young or if grown in containers.
An annual mulch of bark or compost in spring helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool.
Prefers slightly acidic to neutral, fertile, humus-rich soil.
Avoid heavy clay or very alkaline ground. If needed, plant in raised beds or containers using ericaceous compost mixed with grit for drainage.
Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser or an acer-specific feed.
Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which encourage lush growth more vulnerable to wind and frost.
Requires very little pruning.
Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late autumn or winter while dormant.
Avoid heavy pruning, which can spoil its elegant, natural cascading shape.
Generally pest-free.
May occasionally see aphids on new shoots.
Leaf scorch (browned tips or edges) is typically due to drought, strong winds or intense sun, not disease.
Excellent choice for large pots or half barrels, perfect for patios or small gardens.
Use ericaceous compost with added grit, ensure the pot has good drainage, and raise it on feet.
Water regularly, and in severe winters, protect pots by wrapping them or moving to a sheltered position.
