Acer palmatum Inaba-shidare is a superb lace-leaf Japanese maple, prized for its exceptional colour stability, graceful cascading habit and finely divided foliage. Originating from Japan, it is considered one of the best red dissectum varieties, holding its rich tones well into summer, unlike many red maples that fade to green or bronze.

Key Features:

  • Foliage: Deeply dissected, lace-like leaves emerge brilliant crimson in spring, develop into a striking deep burgundy to purple-red through summer, and turn a vivid scarlet red in autumn, providing a long season of interest.

  • Habit: Forms a beautiful cascading, mounded shape, typically reaching 1.52 metres high and spreading to 2.53 metres, with elegantly arching branches that create a layered, dome-like canopy.

  • Bark: Smooth grey with slight reddish tints on young shoots, giving gentle winter interest once the leaves have fallen.

Its ideal as a specimen in lawns, raised beds, rock gardens, or beside water features where its branches can gracefully drape over edges. Its reliable colour and elegant silhouette make it a standout choice for any garden.

Detailed Care Guide for Acer palmatum Inaba-shidare

Position & Light

  • Prefers partial shade or dappled sunlight.

  • More sun-tolerant than many red lace-leaf varieties, making it excellent for brighter spots, though still best sheltered from hot afternoon sun to avoid leaf scorch.

  • Needs a protected position, away from strong winds which can damage delicate foliage.

Shelter

  • Essential to plant in a site sheltered from cold or drying winds to prevent the fine leaves from browning or tearing.

Watering

  • Likes soil to be consistently moist but well-drained.

  • Water thoroughly during dry periods, especially when newly planted or grown in containers.

  • An annual mulch of compost or bark in spring helps keep roots cool and retains moisture.

Soil

  • Prefers slightly acidic to neutral, fertile, humus-rich soil.

  • Avoid heavy clay or very alkaline sites. If needed, plant in raised beds or large pots using ericaceous compost mixed with grit for drainage.

Feeding

  • Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser or a specific acer feed.

  • Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers which encourage lush, soft growth prone to wind and frost.

Pruning & Maintenance

  • Requires minimal pruning.

  • Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter while dormant.

  • Avoid heavy pruning, which spoils its natural cascading shape.

Pests & Problems

  • Generally very healthy and pest-free.

  • May occasionally suffer from aphids on tender shoots.

  • Leaf scorch (brown edges) is most often caused by drought, strong winds or excessive sun rather than disease.

Container Growing

  • Excellent for large pots, perfect for patios or where garden soil isnt ideal.

  • Use ericaceous compost with added grit, ensure good drainage with pot feet, and water consistently.

  • In harsh winters, wrap pots or move to a sheltered area to protect the roots.
