Leucothoe axil. Curly Red is a compact evergreen with distinctive curled foliage that flushes rich red on new growth, deepens through summer, and colours up again in colder weather. In spring it bears small, white, urn-shaped flowers. Ideal for containers or the front of borders in acidic soil, it thrives in partial to full shade with moisture-retentive, humus-rich, well-drained conditions; avoid chalky soils. Slow growing and naturally tidy, it provides year-round texture and colour in shaded planting schemes.
