Leucothoe is a reliable evergreen for acidic, humus-rich soils, forming neat foliage with small, white, urn-shaped flowers in spring. It thrives in partial to full shade where the soil stays consistently moist but well drained, making an excellent choice for shaded borders, woodland-style planting and containers of ericaceous compost. Keep roots cool with an annual mulch of leafmould or composted bark, water during dry spells, feed in spring with an ericaceous fertiliser, and prune lightly after flowering only to maintain shape.
