Pernettya (Gaultheria) mucronata is a slow-growing, prickly, evergreen shrub for acidic soils, forming dense mounds of small glossy green leaves. In late spring to early summer it bears small white, urn-shaped flowers which, when pollinated, are followed by showy pink berries that colour in autumn and often persist into winter. Ideal for acid borders or containers in sun or light shade; avoid chalky soil. Fully hardy, eventually reaching around 11.5 m in height and spread.
