A compact, evergreen shrub (syn. Gaultheria mucronata) with small, spiny-toothed green leaves. It bears small, urn-shaped white flowers in late spring to early summer, followed by showy red berries on female plants when pollinated by a compatible male. Grow in moist but well-drained, acidic (ericaceous) soil in sun or light shade; ideal for borders or containers filled with ericaceous compost. Fully hardy, with a moderate growth rate; prune lightly after fruiting to maintain shape. Eventual size about 11.5m.
